As your plane descends and the pilot lines up for the runway at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, your neck is turned to the left and your nose pushed up against the window, hoping to see your dreams coming true in the form of long lines of swell and whitewater. Should you be lucky, those nice lines that seem to peel off the edge of the runway and break on down the reef are Airport Lefts.

Airport Lefts can be a great wave for surfers just wanting to try out their developing skills on a reef break, which is why on small days it can get pretty crowded, but when it’s a solid 3-4 feet it’s a lot of fun for the intermediate and expert surfer. Not many barrels to be had, but an easy drop and a nice wall section to hit makes it a great change from surfing beachbreaks but without the danger factor of the reefs on the Bukit.
