Nine years later, Timmy Turner, Daniel Jones and Mikala Jones return to the scene of the score
- MIKALA JONES -
The horizon just disappears. Turn off the brain. Paddle as hard as I can. Make the drop. Pull in. And then it’s like, “Oh shit, look at this thing. This thing is nuts.” I was riding a short, thick 6’1” that people always make fun of but works really good for a wave like this. The tube on this one was so spitting I could even see half the time. Dustin had burned his card shooting Daniel’s wave before this one so he only got this one shot. Jeremy Rumas filmed the wave on 16mm and got fully cleaned up by the lip and rolled across the reef. I came flying out almost right on top of Daniel — almost ran him over. I mean, we’d been out here for four days, with five of us on a tiny, creaking wooden boat with no life vests, no radio, no bathroom, no nothing…and it was one of the best trips of my life.
- TIMMY TURNER -
Timmy keeps everyone amused with all his crazy stories. He’s out of his mind, but he’s together enough to get plenty barreled. And this is his spot. He spent months camping out here nine years ago just trying to score this wave for his film “Second Thoughts.” It’s not an easy place to get. I’ve come here maybe a dozen times since then and have never seen it break the same. But when Timmy called Daniel and I in Hawaii and said this swell was gonna be “The One,” I had to trust him. It was a tough call to make. I’d just flown to Hawaii with my daughter to spend time with my mom, who’s sick with ALS right now. She was a little heartbroken we had to leave, but she understands how much something like this means to us. To be scoring like this with my brother, it means a lot. I know my mom’s proud to see these photos. We sacrifice everything to get waves like this. Timmy’s been through a lot too, and just look at him smiling. What more can you say?
