Guessing at what could be the last swell of the year before the rainy season, Garut, Mega, Gobleg, Yudha, Gatot the videographer, and I pulled together a last minute trip in less than 24 hours.
We left Kuta on a crowded and noisy night with the assumption that we would be scoring the first waves that next morning. The trip to Padang Bai harbor went fast because stoke levels were running high. We left for Lembar harbor (Lombok) on a ferry that didn’t have any cabins. With only the stars in the skies as company, we hoped we could rest on the top floor of the ferry. Not long after, it rained relentlessly until we were all soaked.
Arriving in Lombok, we headed straight for Desert Point. We were surprised because upon arrival at our destination it was far from what we were expecting. The swell hadn’t hit yet.
After waiting around for hours, Garut, Gobleg, and Mega looked impatient and chose to surf the fun 2 foot waves. Here we also met up with the familiar faces of Jeren, Mikala Jones, and Rory Parker.
The next day’s waves were only 2-3ft but very surfable. Everyone really enjoyed the clean long lefts of Desert Point. This helped us decide to extend our trip by another day.
We ended up making the right call, because on our last day 4-5 foot super perfect waves were breaking. Too bad that after only a few minutes in the water, the waves got even bigger but also bumpy. Finally we called it a day and made our way towards Supersuck, Sumbawa.
Another ferry ride brought us to our next destination on Sumbawa island. The trip from Lombok to Sumbawa was not as long as the trip from Bali to Lombok.

From the harbor we still had to drive an hour and a half to Supersuck. But time we spent on the road paid off when we saw 5-6ft waves breaking in the distance. Seeing this sent our amp level went way up to get in the water. Luckily at the hotel we met with John the owner who ended up being really helpful. He took us in his speedboat to the break where we surfed for an hour until we were exhausted.
The next day we woke up with a good feeling, but what ended up happening was worse than we expected. The waves we thought were going to be better than the day before weren’t, and conditions had gotten really choppy. From past experience Garut felt that this was just temporary and that we would score that afternoon. He said that waves here suffer from morning sickness. Hahahaha…
What Garut said was right. That afternoon the 5-6 foot waves we waited for arrived looking clean and perfect. We went back for the speedboat to surf for about three hours, catching wave after wave. John seemed amazed watching these three Bali surfers in their element. They seemed so at home in these waves. “They deserve to get these waves,” said John.
After celebrating the results of that day long into the night, we set out on the journey home. Back on the steady ferry the stars returned to witness the end of our island hopping adventure. We were stoked and couldn’t wait for the next island hop. Even the calm night breeze seemed proud of our success.
