THE LAST TEMPTATION

For those of us that live in Jakarta, Pelabuhan Ratu has always been a place we visit to ride waves because it is relatively close to get to. Not too far from the best point in Pelabuhan Ratu, Cimaja, is another quality point that is fairly exclusive in the West Java area. Within a calendar year this point will break around five times. Last year we were lucky enough to experience good surf at this point three times.

Upon hearing about a forecasted swell we put together collected data from other surfers we know through our social networks to pinpoint the perfect time to make a trip there. The beginning of October was looking ideal with a 7.5ft westerly swell and wind conditions that were promising offshore flow.

There was quite a crew that jumped on board for this trip. The first car housed a group of senior waveriders like Emir, Riki, Bum Bum and DJ Achdyat. The second car transported Iis, Jeje, and two friends new to surfing, Dini and Attet. Outside of the Jakarta group were the Bandung crew Luky 347, Inong, Aldy and Imam. Another one of our friends from Singapore, regular West Java surfer Mike Lim, flew straight from Singapore, transited in Jakarta, and then went straight to Cimaja. If they had a Pelabuhan Ratu airport he would have beat us to Cimaja.

It took awhile to round up the high spirited crew and we finally left at 5 am from Jakarta. In three hours we arrived at Cimaja. Upon seeing the rising tide, we decided to surf at Cimaja’’s famous righthander. It seemed like the session was not enough for us, with 4 ft sets and neverending wipe outs that woke us up that early morning.
